So, you want to get fit and you want to start being healthier and in better shape today? Here are some guidelines that will help you to get fit and stay fit.

Be careful about what foods you put into your mouth. This means not just what you eat at mealtimes but while snacking too. Fatty meats such as beef, port and ham should be consumed at a minimum or avoided all together. Choose low-fat dairy products in order to reduce fat consumption.

Make exercising a daily part of your routine by thinking physical activity in everything you do, for example:

Have to get something at the corner store? Don’t drive there walk, even if the store is 3 blocks away, you can do it! Work in a tall building? Choose to walk up a few flights instead of taking the elevator. Have a lunch break? Instead of sitting around a table chatting with friends, invite them to join you for a walk outside after eating to burn off the calories you just consumed. Going shopping after work? Park in the furthest lot away from the store entrance so you have to walk further.

When you decide this new life of fitness make an effort to start a journal of your efforts so that you can see your progress and be encouraged. Write down all of the physical activity choices that you made each day and how it made you feel. Write down what foods you ate for meals and snacks. Write down the temptations that you were overcome, like that box of donuts that sales rep brought into the office this morning, or the milkshake you passed by for the low fat milk instead. Write down what is difficult for you and brainstorm ways to conquer these stumbling blocks.

Celebrate how fit you are becoming with friends and family.

Vow to eat health foods like lots of fruits and vegetables. The National Cancer Institute recommends that everyone should eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Ask your doctor for your specific nutritional requirements that will be based on your age and health status. Drink plenty of water each day. Make sure that you are aware of what the proper portion size is for each food item that you are eating and stick to it. You do not need to have dessert at every meal. Watch out for those sweets and fats. You can have sweets and fats just make sure that they are occasional and not your main food group.

Something else that is good for your fitness goals would be to get outside and get plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Vitamin D comes from sunlight and is important for proper mineralization of bones.

If you have exercise equipment at home and want to watch TV, set the equipment up in front of the TV so that you can exercise as you watch instead of being a couch potato.
