Exercise and physical fitness is not just for the young, the elderly can benefit from being physically fit. When those over 65 are physically fit they can lose weight and maintain a healthy weight, and enjoy a healthier life that includes a lower risk for disease. A fit elderly person is someone who is comfortable moving around and functioning.

As we age our bodies become weaker. Being physically fit each day gives our bodies the ability to be strengthened and become more flexible which helps with mobility. Exercise also increases blood circulation, which benefits the heart and the healing process. The elderly can benefit from such exercises as water aerobics, yoga, and walks. When the elderly enjoy greater flexibility their joints won’t be as uncomfortable. Yoga helps them to relax and can elongate muscles.

Fitness programs for seniors should always stress safety and comfort. When seniors are comfortable they are more likely to participate in fitness programs. When their hearts are strong and their bodies are leaner, the elderly are less prone to falls, or having shortness of breath.

Enjoying daily physical activity helps to lessen the affects of depression and anxiety. Joining exercise groups can also encourage social interactions with others and give them a sense of purpose and enjoyment.

If we eat a well-balanced healthy diet, exercise on a regular basis, and take good care of our bodies there is no reason we can’t all live long, healthy lives.

The elderly can benefit from strength training because it helps to prevent osteoporosis, can decrease the pain of arthritis, improves the glucose metabolism and can give more flexibility by strengthening tendons, ligaments and bones. This strengthening can allow you to be able to pick up objects such as grocery bags, or grandchildren, and get around better such as getting up from a sitting position or going up and down stairs.

If the elderly have not been active for a while it is important to see a doctor before starting any new exercise program. Certain exercises may be harmful with particular health issues or disabilities and so exercises should be tailored to the individual.

Being physically fit benefits the elderly individual because they will be healthier, live longer, and be able to function more easily. Physical fitness also has mental and emotional benefits such as lessening depression and anxiety and giving them a sense of well being. Participating in fitness programs can also encourage social contact with others their age that can ease loneliness.
